Why New Moms Experience Hair Loss & How to Treat It

Postpartum Hair Loss: You're Not Alone

If you've noticed clumps of hair falling out a few months after giving birth, don't panic — this is completely normal. Postpartum hair loss (also called postpartum alopecia) affects up to 50% of new moms and is one of the most common concerns after delivery.

Why Does Postpartum Hair Loss Happen?

During pregnancy, high levels of oestrogen keep your hair in a prolonged growth phase, which is why many pregnant women enjoy thicker, fuller hair. After delivery, oestrogen levels drop sharply, causing a large number of hairs to enter the shedding phase all at once. This typically starts around 3-4 months postpartum and can last for several months.

When Will It Stop?

For most moms, postpartum hair loss slows down by 6 months and returns to normal by 12 months after delivery. If hair loss continues beyond a year, consult your doctor as it may be related to thyroid issues or nutritional deficiencies.

How to Manage Postpartum Hair Loss

1. Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet

Make sure you're getting enough iron, zinc, biotin, and protein. Foods like eggs, lentils, spinach, nuts, and lean meat support healthy hair growth. If you're breastfeeding, continue taking your prenatal vitamins.

2. Be Gentle with Your Hair

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the scalp
  • Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair
  • Reduce heat styling
  • Use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo

3. Scalp Massage

Regular scalp massages with coconut or castor oil stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and can encourage regrowth. Massage gently for 5-10 minutes a few times a week.

4. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can worsen hair loss. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily, especially if you're breastfeeding.

5. Manage Stress

Stress is a major trigger for hair loss. Try to rest when baby sleeps, ask for help, and take time for yourself — even just 10 minutes a day.

The Good News

Postpartum hair loss is temporary. With the right nutrition, gentle care, and patience, your hair will return to its normal thickness. You've just grown a human — give your body the time it needs to recover!
